Salah — صَلَاة — is the Islamic prayer: the second Pillar of Islam, obligatory five times every day for every adult Muslim. It is direct, structured communication with Allah ﷻ — standing, bowing, prostrating, and sitting in a specific sequence, reciting Quran and supplications, facing the Kaaba in Mecca. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The first thing a person will be called to account for on the Day of Judgement is the prayer. If it is sound, all his deeds will be sound. If it is corrupt, all his deeds will be corrupt.” (Tabarani, authenticated by Al-Albani).
The five daily prayers
The five prayers are: Fajr (dawn — 2 rak’ahs), Dhuhr (midday — 4 rak’ahs), Asr (afternoon — 4 rak’ahs), Maghrib (sunset — 3 rak’ahs), and Isha (night — 4 rak’ahs). Each has a specific window of time determined by the sun’s position. Missing the window without valid reason is a serious matter; praying at the earliest part of the window is most recommended. The five prayers were prescribed during the Night of Ascension (Isra wal Mi’raj) — they were originally fifty, reduced to five at the request of the Prophet ﷺ through Musa ﷺ, while keeping the reward of fifty.
The conditions and pillars of salah
Conditions (must be met before prayer is valid): being Muslim, being of sound mind, having reached puberty, being in a state of ritual purity (wudu or ghusl), time having entered, facing the qiblah (direction of the Kaaba), covering the awrah (private parts), and the prayer space being clean. Pillars (actions without which the prayer is invalid): the opening takbir (Allahu Akbar), standing if able, reciting Al-Fatiha, bowing (ruku), rising from ruku, prostrating (sujud) twice per rak’ah, sitting between the two prostrations, the final sitting (tashahhud), and the closing salams.
Why salah was prescribed five times
Allah ﷻ says: “Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.” (Quran 4:103). The specified times structure the day around five returns to Allah ﷻ — not allowing more than a few hours to pass without direct communication. The Prophet ﷺ described it with the image of a river at a person’s door: if they bathed in it five times a day, would any dirt remain? That is what the five prayers do to sins. (Bukhari 528, Muslim 667).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is salah in Islam?
Salah is the Islamic prayer — the second Pillar of Islam, obligatory five times daily. It involves standing, bowing, and prostrating in a specific sequence while reciting Quran and supplications, facing the Kaaba. The Prophet ﷺ described it as the first thing accounted for on the Day of Judgement — if sound, all deeds are sound; if corrupt, all deeds are corrupt.
How many prayers are there in Islam?
Five obligatory prayers daily: Fajr (2 rak’ahs), Dhuhr (4), Asr (4), Maghrib (3), Isha (4). Total: 17 obligatory rak’ahs per day. They were prescribed during the Isra wal Mi’raj — originally fifty, reduced to five while keeping the reward of fifty. Beyond these, there are confirmed Sunnah prayers before and after each obligatory prayer, and the voluntary night prayer (Tahajjud).
Five times a day. Five returns. Five rinses of whatever accumulated since the last one. The Prophet ﷺ said if a river ran at your door and you bathed in it five times a day, no dirt would remain. That is what salah does.
