Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim — بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ — means “In the name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.” It opens the Quran. It opens 113 of its 114 surahs. It is the first thing a Muslim says before eating, drinking, beginning any significant task, entering the home, and starting any act of worship. Far from being a ritual phrase, it is a statement of intention: whatever follows is done in Allah’s ﷻ name, under His authority, and in seeking His blessing.
The meaning of each word
Bismi — in the name of. This is not merely “starting with” but placing the action under the authority and blessing of what follows. Allah ﷻ — the proper name of God, unique to Islam, carrying no plural and no feminine form, impossible to reduce to a generic deity. Al-Rahman — the Most Gracious, the vast and encompassing mercy extended to all creation in this world, believer and disbeliever alike. Al-Rahim — the Most Merciful, the specific and particular mercy reserved for the believers in the next life. The two names of mercy are placed before any action, establishing mercy as the framework within which everything occurs.
What the Prophet ﷺ said about it
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Any important matter that does not begin with Bismillah is cut off from barakah.” (Abu Dawud 4840 — scholars note discussion of the chain, but the practice is firmly established throughout the Sunnah). When eating: “If one of you forgets to mention the name of Allah ﷻ before eating, let him say: Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirah — In the name of Allah ﷻ at its beginning and end.” (Abu Dawud 3767, Tirmidhi 1858 — authenticated). He said Bismillah before entering the home, before intimate relations, before wudu — it structures the beginning of everything.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Bismillah mean in English?
“In the name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.” It places whatever follows under the name and authority of Allah ﷻ, seeking His barakah. The two divine names Al-Rahman and Al-Rahim — encompassing mercy for all creation and specific mercy for believers — frame every action that begins with it.
Why do Muslims say Bismillah before eating?
The Prophet ﷺ specifically instructed that Bismillah be said before eating (Abu Dawud 3767). Without it, the Sunnah literature notes that the Shaytan shares in the meal. With it, eating becomes an act that begins in Allah’s ﷻ name, which changes its spiritual character entirely. If forgotten at the start, saying “Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirah” upon remembering still covers the meal.
Any matter not begun with Bismillah is cut off from barakah. Before you begin — say it. Mean it. Everything that follows is different for it.
