Signs of Weak Iman and How to Revive It

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Iman wears out in the heart of any one of you just as a garment wears out. Ask Allah ﷻ to renew iman in your hearts.” (Al-Hakim, authenticated). Iman is not a static state — it is a living condition that grows and diminishes based on what it is fed. The scholars of the Salaf understood this not as a problem to be fixed once but as a continuous condition requiring continuous care. The first step in the revival of iman is the honest recognition of where it currently is.

Signs of weakened iman

Ibn al-Qayyim ؒ identified specific signs of weakened iman that the honest person can recognise in themselves: sins committed without the former feeling of discomfort or regret; a heart that is hardened and not moved by Quran recitation, the mention of death, or reminders of the Day of Judgement; worship becoming a burden rather than a source of energy; decreased dhikr and reduced frequency of turning to Allah ﷻ; increasing attachment to this world and decreasing concern for the next; and a growing indifference to the state of the ummah.

How to revive it

Ask Allah ﷻ directly. The dua “Ya muqallib al-qulub, thabbit qalbi ala dinik” — O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm on Your religion — was frequently recited by the Prophet ﷺ (Tirmidhi 2140, authenticated). The heart is under Allah’s ﷻ control. Asking directly for its revival is the most immediately available tool.

Return to the basics. Ibn al-Qayyim ؒ identified ten causes of increased iman — beginning with Quran recitation with tadabbur, and continuing through knowledge of Allah’s ﷻ names, following the Sunnah, performing voluntary acts, maintaining dhikr, and avoiding sin. Revival begins by returning to whichever of these has been most neglected.

Change the environment. The company, the content consumed, the physical space — all affect the heart. Moving toward the environment of iman (the mosque, the Quran, the righteous) and away from what suppresses it (the comparison-scroll, the heedless company, the entertainment that normalises sin) is not optional — it is a structural requirement for revival.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs of weak iman in Islam?

Scholars identify: sin without the former discomfort or regret; a heart unmoved by the Quran, reminders of death, or Judgement Day; worship becoming burdensome; decreased dhikr; increased worldly attachment; and indifference to the ummah’s state. The Prophet ﷺ said that iman wears out like a garment and instructed that one should ask Allah ﷻ to renew it (Al-Hakim). Revival comes through: direct dua for heart firmness (Tirmidhi 2140), returning to the Quran with tadabbur, changing the environment toward what feeds iman, and the deliberate return to basics — prayer with presence, dhikr with attention, community with the righteous.

Iman wears out. Ask Allah ﷻ to renew it — that is the dua the Prophet ﷺ taught. Then do what feeds it: the Quran, dhikr, the mosque, righteous company, and avoidance of sin. The heart responds to what it is fed.
