Salawat: The Practice That Returns Tenfold Every Time

There is a practice available to you at any moment, in any state, requiring no wudu and no particular time — and the Prophet guaranteed that every single time you do it, Allah sends ten blessings upon you. It takes three seconds. Most of us do it infrequently and without thinking.

Salawat upon the Prophet. “Allahumma salli ala Muhammad.”

What Allah says about it

Allah says in Surah Al-Ahzab (Quran 33:56): “Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and salute him with worthy greetings.” Allah and all His angels do this continuously. The believers are invited to join that company.

The Prophet said: “Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah sends ten blessings upon him, removes ten sins from him, and raises him ten ranks.” (Nasa’i 1297, graded sahih). One for ten. No other dhikr has this documented return in this explicit form.

What it does for the relationship

The Prophet said: “The closest people to me on the Day of Judgement will be those who sent the most salawat upon me.” (Tirmidhi 484, graded hasan). Proximity to the Prophet on that day — the day when proximity to those who intercede will matter most — is built in this world, through this practice, one salawat at a time.

He also said his salawat are presented to him, and that he responds to them. (Abu Dawud 2041). The connection is not historical and one-directional. It is present and reciprocal. When you send salawat, he receives it wherever you are.

When to send it

After every adhan — the Prophet said whoever repeats the adhan then sends salawat upon him will have intercession on the Day of Judgement (Muslim 384). On Fridays — the Prophet said to increase salawat on Friday because they are presented to him (Abu Dawud 1047). Before dua — the Prophet said dua is suspended between heaven and earth until salawat is sent (Tirmidhi 486). And throughout the day, in the gaps — in the car, walking, waiting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the reward for sending salawat on the Prophet?

For every single salawat: Allah sends ten blessings on the sender, removes ten sins, and raises ten ranks (Nasa’i 1297). Additionally, salawat build closeness to the Prophet on the Day of Judgement (Tirmidhi 484), and unlock intercession when sent after the adhan (Muslim 384). No other optional dhikr has this documented combination of rewards.

Does the Prophet receive salawat now?

Yes. The Prophet said: “No one sends salawat upon me except that Allah returns my soul to me so that I may return his greeting.” (Abu Dawud 2041). Scholars explain that the prophets are alive in their graves with a special life. The salawat you send reaches him and he responds. The connection is real and present, not merely commemorative.

Allahumma salli ala Muhammad. Say it now. Then again in the car. Then again before you sleep. Ten blessings each time. The Prophet receives every one.
