Loving the Prophet’s ﷺ family — the Ahl al-Bayt — is part of faith, and the Sunni tradition holds them in deep honour and love. But it also holds a beautiful balance: honouring the Ahl al-Bayt without falling into the two extremes of excess or neglect that have divided others.
This piece builds on our earlier one: Loving the Ahl al-Bayt: The Prophet’s ﷺ Family in Islam — here we go deeper and more practical.
Loving and honouring the Prophet’s ﷺ family — the Ahl al-Bayt — is part of the faith, and the Sunni tradition (Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jama‘ah) holds them in deep honour, love, and respect. The Prophet ﷺ loved his family dearly, and enjoined their honour; loving them is a mark of loving him. But the Sunni tradition holds this love within a beautiful and important balance — a middle path between two extremes that have divided others: the extreme of excess (elevating the Ahl al-Bayt beyond their due, into infallibility or beyond, or making love of them a basis for hatred of others), and the extreme of neglect (failing to give them their due honour and love). The Sunni way, as always, is the balanced middle: honouring and loving the Ahl al-Bayt deeply, giving them their full due, while keeping that love within the bounds of the truth, and alongside love and respect for the Companions ؓ — not setting the love of one against the other. This balance is a beautiful and often-misunderstood aspect of the Sunni position. To understand how the Sunni tradition honours the Ahl al-Bayt — with deep love and full honour, held in the balanced middle between excess and neglect — is to hold the love of the Prophet’s ﷺ family rightly, as the tradition of Ahl al-Sunnah teaches: loving them dearly, honouring them fully, and keeping that love within the truth and alongside love for all whom the Prophet ﷺ loved.
Who the Ahl al-Bayt Are, and Their Honour
Understanding who the Ahl al-Bayt are and the honour due to them is the foundation of loving them rightly, in the Sunni understanding. First, who they are: the Ahl al-Bayt (the People of the House) are the family and household of the Prophet ﷺ — including his wives (the Mothers of the Believers, whom the Quran addresses as Ahl al-Bayt in 33:33), his daughter Fatimah ؓ, his cousin and son-in-law ‘Ali ؓ, his grandsons al-Hasan and al-Husayn ؓ, and, in the broader sense, the wider family of the Prophet ﷺ (the descendants of Hashim, upon whom zakat is not given as an honour). The Sunni understanding honours all of them. Second, the Prophet ﷺ enjoined their honour: the Prophet ﷺ enjoined the honour and good treatment of his family, reminding the community of them — “I remind you of Allah ﷻ regarding my family” (Muslim 2408) — and their love and honour is a mark of loving him. Third, loving them is part of faith and of loving the Prophet ﷺ: since they are the Prophet’s ﷺ own family, whom he loved dearly, loving and honouring them flows from loving him, and is part of the faith. Fourth, they hold a special honour and rank: the Ahl al-Bayt hold a special honour and rank in Islam, purified and honoured by Allah ﷻ (as in 33:33), and the Sunni tradition holds them in deep respect and love, honouring their lineage and their standing. Fifth, their due includes love, respect, and honouring their descendants: the honour due to the Ahl al-Bayt includes loving and respecting them, honouring their righteous descendants, sending blessings upon the Prophet’s ﷺ family in the prayer (as in the salawat “O Allah ﷻ, send blessings upon Muhammad ﷺ and the family of Muhammad ﷺ”), and giving them their due place of honour. So the Ahl al-Bayt — the Prophet’s ﷺ family and household, including his wives, Fatimah ؓ, ‘Ali ؓ, al-Hasan and al-Husayn ؓ, and his wider family — are held by the Sunni tradition in deep honour and love, their honour enjoined by the Prophet ﷺ (Muslim 2408), their love part of the faith and of loving him, and their due including love, respect, honouring their descendants, and blessings upon them in the prayer — a deep and full honour, given within the balanced Sunni way.
The Balanced Middle: Neither Excess Nor Neglect
The beauty of the Sunni position on the Ahl al-Bayt is its balance — the middle path between two extremes — and understanding this balance lets one love them rightly. First, the extreme of neglect, to be avoided: one extreme is to neglect the Ahl al-Bayt — to fail to give them their due honour and love, or to harbour any ill-feeling toward the Prophet’s ﷺ family. The Sunni tradition firmly rejects this: the Ahl al-Bayt are to be loved and honoured deeply, and neglecting or disrespecting them is a serious failing. Second, the extreme of excess, also to be avoided: the other extreme is excess (ghuluw) — elevating the Ahl al-Bayt beyond their due, into a rank belonging only to Allah ﷻ or His Messenger ﷺ (such as claiming infallibility for them beyond what is established, or directing to them what belongs to Allah ﷻ alone), or making the love of them a basis for hatred, cursing, or excommunication of others (such as the Companions ؓ). The Sunni tradition rejects this excess too, for it exceeds the bounds of truth and, ironically, dishonours the Ahl al-Bayt themselves, who would never have wanted love of them to become a basis for such excess. Third, the balanced middle — deep love within the truth: the Sunni way is the balanced middle: honouring and loving the Ahl al-Bayt deeply, giving them their full due, while keeping that love within the bounds of the truth — not exceeding it into excess, nor falling short into neglect. This is the way of Ahl al-Sunnah in all things: the balanced middle. Fourth, loving the Ahl al-Bayt AND the Companions ؓ together: importantly, the Sunni tradition does not set the love of the Ahl al-Bayt against the love of the Companions ؓ, but loves and honours both — for the Prophet ﷺ loved both, many of the Companions ؓ were themselves of his family (and his family were among the Companions ؓ), and ‘Ali ؓ, al-Hasan ؓ, and the Ahl al-Bayt loved and honoured the Companions ؓ, married among them, and named their children after them. So the Sunni loves the Prophet’s ﷺ family and his Companions ؓ together, as he loved them together, refusing to make love of one a basis for hatred of the other. Fifth, this balance honours the Ahl al-Bayt truly: this balanced love is the truest honour to the Ahl al-Bayt — loving them as they were, within the truth they upheld, and alongside those they themselves loved — rather than an excess they would have rejected or a neglect that wrongs them. So the balanced middle of the Sunni tradition — avoiding both the neglect that wrongs the Ahl al-Bayt and the excess that exceeds the truth, loving and honouring them deeply within the bounds of the truth, and loving them alongside the Companions ؓ as the Prophet ﷺ loved both — is the beautiful and balanced way to honour the Prophet’s ﷺ family. To honour the Ahl al-Bayt rightly, then, is to love and honour them deeply as part of loving the Prophet ﷺ, give them their full due (love, respect, blessings upon them in the prayer, honouring their descendants), and keep that love in the balanced middle — neither the excess that exceeds the truth nor the neglect that wrongs them, and alongside love for the Companions ؓ whom the Prophet ﷺ and the Ahl al-Bayt themselves loved — holding the love of the Prophet’s ﷺ family in the beautiful balance of the Sunni way.
Love and honour the Ahl al-Bayt deeply, as part of faith. Give the Prophet’s ﷺ family — the Ahl al-Bayt — their due of deep love and honour, for the Prophet ﷺ loved them dearly and enjoined their honour: “I remind you of Allah ﷻ regarding my family” (Muslim 2408). They include his wives (the Mothers of the Believers, addressed as Ahl al-Bayt in 33:33), Fatimah ؓ, ‘Ali ؓ, al-Hasan and al-Husayn ؓ, and his wider family. Loving them is part of the faith and a mark of loving the Prophet ﷺ. Honour them with love, respect, blessings upon the Prophet’s ﷺ family in your prayer, and honouring their righteous descendants — giving them the deep and full honour the Sunni tradition holds for them.
Keep your love in the balanced middle — neither excess nor neglect. Hold your love of the Ahl al-Bayt in the beautiful Sunni balance, avoiding two extremes. Avoid the extreme of neglect — failing to give them their due honour, or harbouring any ill-feeling toward the Prophet’s ﷺ family. And avoid the extreme of excess (ghuluw) — elevating them beyond their due into what belongs to Allah ﷻ or His Messenger ﷺ, or making love of them a basis for hatred, cursing, or excommunication of others. The Sunni way is the balanced middle: honouring and loving them deeply, giving them their full due, while keeping that love within the bounds of the truth — the truest honour to the Ahl al-Bayt, which is neither excess they would reject nor neglect that wrongs them.
Love the Ahl al-Bayt and the Companions ؓ together. Do not set the love of the Ahl al-Bayt against the love of the Companions ؓ, but love and honour both — for the Prophet ﷺ loved both, many Companions ؓ were themselves of his family, and ‘Ali ؓ, al-Hasan ؓ, and the Ahl al-Bayt loved and honoured the Companions ؓ, married among them, and named their children after them. So love the Prophet’s ﷺ family and his Companions ؓ together, as he loved them together, refusing to make love of one a basis for hatred of the other. This is the balanced Sunni way, and the truest honour to the Ahl al-Bayt — loving them as they were, within the truth they upheld, and alongside those they themselves loved.
Loving the Prophet’s ﷺ family — the Ahl al-Bayt — is part of faith, and the Sunni tradition holds them in deep honour and love, within a beautiful balance. Love and honour the Ahl al-Bayt deeply, as part of faith and of loving the Prophet ﷺ (Muslim 2408; 33:33); keep your love in the balanced middle — neither the excess that exceeds the truth nor the neglect that wrongs them; and love the Ahl al-Bayt and the Companions ؓ together, as the Prophet ﷺ loved both. The Sunni way, as always, is the balanced middle: honouring and loving the Prophet’s ﷺ family deeply, giving them their full due — love, respect, blessings upon them in the prayer, honouring their descendants — while keeping that love within the bounds of the truth, and alongside love for the Companions ؓ whom the Prophet ﷺ and the Ahl al-Bayt themselves loved. This balance is the truest honour to the Ahl al-Bayt — loving them as they were, within the truth they upheld, not an excess they would have rejected nor a neglect that wrongs them. So hold the love of the Prophet’s ﷺ family in the beautiful balance of the Sunni way: deep love and full honour, held in the truth, and given alongside love for all whom the Prophet ﷺ loved — his family and his Companions ؓ together.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who are the Ahl al-Bayt?
The Ahl al-Bayt (the People of the House) are the family and household of the Prophet ﷺ. They include his wives, the Mothers of the Believers, whom the Quran addresses as Ahl al-Bayt (33:33); his daughter Fatimah ؓ; his cousin and son-in-law ‘Ali ؓ; his grandsons al-Hasan and al-Husayn ؓ; and, in the broader sense, his wider family (the descendants of Hashim, upon whom zakat is not given as an honour). The Sunni tradition honours all of them deeply. The Prophet ﷺ loved his family dearly and enjoined their honour: “I remind you of Allah ﷻ regarding my family” (Muslim 2408). Loving and honouring the Ahl al-Bayt is part of the faith and a mark of loving the Prophet ﷺ, and their due includes love, respect, sending blessings upon the Prophet’s ﷺ family in the prayer, and honouring their righteous descendants — given within the balanced Sunni way.
How does the Sunni tradition view loving the Ahl al-Bayt?
With deep love and honour, held in a beautiful balance — the middle path between two extremes. The Sunni tradition (Ahl al-Sunnah) holds the Prophet’s ﷺ family in deep honour, love, and respect, for the Prophet ﷺ loved them dearly and enjoined their honour (Muslim 2408), and loving them is part of loving him. But it holds this love in the balanced middle: avoiding the extreme of neglect (failing to give them their due) and the extreme of excess (elevating them beyond their due, or making love of them a basis for hatred of others). And importantly, it loves the Ahl al-Bayt alongside the Companions ؓ, not against them — for the Prophet ﷺ loved both, and the Ahl al-Bayt themselves loved and honoured the Companions ؓ. So the Sunni way is deep love and full honour for the Prophet’s ﷺ family, held within the truth and alongside love for his Companions ؓ — the balanced middle.
What is the balance in loving the Prophet’s family?
The Sunni balance is the middle path between two extremes. On one side is the extreme of neglect — failing to give the Ahl al-Bayt their due honour and love, which the Sunni tradition firmly rejects, for they are to be loved and honoured deeply. On the other side is the extreme of excess (ghuluw) — elevating them beyond their due into a rank belonging only to Allah ﷻ or His Messenger ﷺ, or making love of them a basis for hatred, cursing, or excommunication of others (such as the Companions ؓ), which the tradition also rejects, for it exceeds the truth and dishonours the Ahl al-Bayt themselves. The balanced middle is to honour and love them deeply, give them their full due, while keeping that love within the bounds of the truth — and to love them alongside the Companions ؓ, as the Prophet ﷺ loved both. This balance is the truest honour to the Ahl al-Bayt: loving them as they were, within the truth they upheld.
Can I love the Ahl al-Bayt and the Companions ؓ at the same time?
Yes — and this is precisely the Sunni way. The Sunni tradition does not set the love of the Ahl al-Bayt against the love of the Companions ؓ, but loves and honours both — for the Prophet ﷺ loved both, and there is no contradiction. Indeed, many of the Companions ؓ were themselves of the Prophet’s ﷺ family, and his family were among his Companions ؓ. And the Ahl al-Bayt themselves — ‘Ali ؓ, al-Hasan ؓ, and others — loved and honoured the Companions ؓ, worked alongside them, married among them, and named their own children after them (‘Ali ؓ named sons Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, and ‘Uthman). So loving the Prophet’s ﷺ family and his Companions ؓ together, as he loved them together, is the natural and balanced position — and making the love of one a basis for hatred of the other is an excess that the Ahl al-Bayt themselves would have rejected. The Sunni loves them all, as the Prophet ﷺ did.
How do I honour the Ahl al-Bayt in practice?
By loving and honouring the Prophet’s ﷺ family deeply and rightly, in the balanced Sunni way. Love and respect them as part of loving the Prophet ﷺ. Send blessings upon the Prophet’s ﷺ family in your prayer, as in the salawat: “O Allah ﷻ, send blessings upon Muhammad ﷺ and upon the family of Muhammad ﷺ.” Honour their righteous descendants and give them their due place of respect. Learn about their lives and virtues, and take them as examples. But keep this love in the balanced middle — neither neglecting them nor exceeding into excess (elevating them beyond their due, or making love of them a basis for hatred of others) — and love them alongside the Companions ؓ, whom the Prophet ﷺ and the Ahl al-Bayt themselves loved. So honour the Ahl al-Bayt with deep love, respect, blessings, and honouring their descendants, held within the truth and alongside love for all whom the Prophet ﷺ loved — the beautiful balance of the Sunni way.
