Surah Al-Asr — سُورَةُ الْعَصْر — is the 103rd surah of the Quran, three verses long. Imam Al-Shafi’i ؒ said: “If people reflected upon this surah alone, it would suffice them.” Three verses that contain the entire framework of human success and the entire cause of human loss — in perhaps the most condensed form of any knowledge available to mankind.
The text and meaning
Wal asr — By time. Allah ﷻ swears by time — drawing attention to it as a matter of consequence. Innal insana lafi khusr — Indeed, mankind is in loss. Not some people in some circumstances — mankind, as a category, is in loss. The default human condition without specific intervention is decline, loss, failure. Illal ladhina amanu wa amilus salihati wa tawasau bil haqqi wa tawasau bis sabr — Except those who believe, do righteous deeds, enjoin each other to truth, and enjoin each other to patience. Four requirements — all four must be present for the exception to apply: iman (belief), amal salih (righteous deeds), mutual enjoining of truth, mutual enjoining of patience.
